charles
Answer:
Hello Charles,
The
up@allnightit.com is not a web site. It is an E-Mail address to send your questions to for answers. I am sorry to say most of the problem is probably with your dial up service. Dial up is very, very slow when downloading pictures or videos. If you are in the middle of downloading an E-Mail and you decide you don't want to continue with the long wait log off of your E-Mail service and restart. This will probably be faster than waiting 1 hour for the E-Mail dial up service to finish. Please consider cable, it is very fast and you will enjoy the advantages.

Hope this helps!

Forward this along to Charles:

I have a question or two for Charles:

1) Are you accessing your E-mail using a web browser or a program like Outlook or Eudora, specifically designed to view E-mail?

2) Starpower.net is hosted by a company called RCN, that may be your dial up provider as well maybe? Anyway, it is their responsibility to trap spam and reject bad E-mails. I would contact them and let them know you have an unusually large amount of spam with attachments that are harming your computer.

3) You can login to webmail, which is accessed most likely from their website or the company you pay your dial up bill to, and then DELETE any E-mails you feel don't belong before you open them. You should be able to select a few and delete them without downloading any attachments. I can not vouch for their software nor can I walk you through it blindly but I do know all of the major services like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. all have ways  you can view your E-mail without downloading any attachments, pictures, sounds, etc.

Hope this helps,

Matt B.

E-Mail:    Question:

Hi Guys,

I just heard the term "ad ons" and I am not familar with it.  A fellow retiree said he was unable to access a website because it informed him that he had "too many ad ons"

I read a little on ad ons but I don't undertand what it is they do.  I went to TOOLS and Manage Ad Ons and see what is enabled, how to disable and that you can add.  Since I don't know what they do I don't know which ones I could disable and potential problems if I do disable. Guess these are my questions:

Thanks for the service you are providing to Over The Hill Car members.   Bill

Jack, FYI, I received this nice informative reply yesterday.  This is a nice perk OTHCP is offering

Hey Bill, sorry for the delay but without further adue (sp?) here is what we think:

  •     What are Ads Ons and what are their benefits
  • These are usually designed to provide some additional functionality through a website that you can benefit from. For example, Microsoft always installs a "plugin" when doing updates so it can have permission to add files to your computer. Many bank sites use these to verify computers and provide additional security. Alternately many adult websites will try to install a plugin that will allow them to advertise to you and track your website search patterns to profit from you. So, in short you should be careful about what ad-ons or plugins that you allow to be installed on your computer. If you have a question about a website that you can not visit, please send it to me and I'll find out why.

  •     Problems if I disable some
  • Troubleshoot. Turn one off and check your major websites...banking, overthehillcarpeople.com (login to be sure), E-mail sites, etc. If you see problems you will need to turn it back on, check google for the names of the ad-ons and you most likely find exactly what they do and are dependant upon to run.

  •     How can I identify what to disable?
  • Google is by far the best resource for getting specific information about ad-ons, plugins, active-x functions, etc. Just ask a question to google just like you would to me in person and you'll find somebody else has probably asked it and gotten the answer. Shorten your question one word at a time if you get jarbled results.

For all other question or concerns please don't hesitate to save my E-mail in your contact for future reference!
