Jack,

My contact from Employee Benefits did in fact respond directly to Mr.
Marshall on January 11, but I see she did not copy you.  Her response is
below.

Have you noticed all the positive press coverage from the Detroit Auto
Show?  It sure is good news!

Take care,

Susan

Re:  Recent communication to Jack Dickinson pertaining to the United Way
Solicitation

       Mr. Marshall:

I want to acknowledge receipt of your note expressing concern regarding
the use of your social security number in connection with the United Way
Campaign.  Generally charities such as the United Way have no reason to
ask for your social security number.  The Social security number is used
in this case only because we wanted to offer you the opportunity to
elect a pension deduction, as a means to contribute to the United Way.
Currently, the only way Fidelity, your pension administrator, can
process this transaction is by use of your social security number.  We
are in the process of working with Fidelity to find an alternative for
future campaigns.  Because we recognize and share your concern regarding
the need to safeguard your social security number, we have worked
closely with both the United Way and Fidelity to assure that they will
handle this information in the most secure manner possible.

We regret the concern that this has caused you and assure that we are
making a concerted effort to eliminate the use of SSN, as an identifier,
   within General Motors.

   Sincerely,

   Roseann Davis

FYI.....TODAY I RECEIVED A SOLICITATION FROM DETROIT.....
UAW (CAL RAPSON) & GM GLOBAL MANUFACTURING (GARY COWGER) FOR THE UNITED WAY.  THE FORM HAD MY SOCIAL SECURITY # PLASTERED ALL OVER IT.  IT'S TOUGH ENOUGH TRYING TO AVOID IDENTITY THEFT EVEN UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES.....BUT TO HAVE YOUR OWN COMPANY SENDING YOUR SS # THROUGH THE MAIL IN A PARTIALLY OPENED ENVELOPE IS
RIDICULOUS.   PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO YOUR CONTACTS IN DETROIT.

Hello OTHCP,

I have looked at your site several times and have not seen any reference
to Fisher Body Division of GM. I think there are a lot of retirees that
would contribute to articles on Fisher Body.
Just a thought.

I am still employed with GMAC and have 28 years with GM, as you probably know GMAC has advised all future retirees that there will be no health care (medical) or life insurance in retirement.  We are all salary here. Can you put me in touch with anyone looking into the legality of this.  As Gmac is going to make a cash contribution to my 401k for me signing a release.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Jack, Re: "The Monthly Tuneup":
I've drunk the cool aide, always have and always will buy American Cars and other domestically produced stuff as well (in spite of the UAW premium which the 90% non-union buying public resents if they think about it).

But this article completely misses the key issue, which is, that took decades for American perception to shift in favor of the Japanese (Koreans, Germans, etc.).
I spent years managing the customer survey activities at a GM Division so I have a little bit of professional insight.  The "initial quality" statistics are basically meaningless unless you are in the production end of the business.  Customers on the verge of purchase typically remember a lot less about the initial quality than they do about the last few months of product quality and reliability.  If someone experiences a rash of problems at what they (or their Toyota owning friends and neighbors) perceive to be too low a mileage/time they act on that reality not on some long ago, almost forgotten, impression that might have earned a bonus for a Plant Manager.

Furthermore when they go to trade their American vehicle in they often/always get screwed because it isn't demanded by the used car buyer who really (for good reason) wants a Honda or Toyota unless the American car is really CHEAP!  Yeah, the media is biased.  But let's remember they grew up watching mom and dad get screwed by diesel Oldsmobiles:  the best marketing gift ever presented to the Japanese!

When Impalas are competitive with Camrays and Civics at 100,000 miles plus, the pendulum will begin to swing back (which it has for GM in some cases).  The next big test will be to see how many pissed off F150/Silverado owners switch to the new Tundra!

E-Mail:

Hi Jack

Great article!  For a long time I have been writing letters to the editors, media folks like Lou Dobbs, etc trying to make the point for the American Car industry but they never get published.

George Bush doesn’t care, the democrats run the country and 90% drive foreign cars and consumer reports office is near by and there is not one American car in the parking lot.   Hell unions don’t care.  The parking lots at the school I teach in are 90%.  How can you win?

Now and then you get a “car” person that writes “the rest of the story” but for the most part it’s all about foreign products.

GM and Ford need to be more pro-active!  The ads in the New York market are all about price.  Marketing needs to highlight the awards and show how they were won through engineering, design, etc.  Let’s see vehicle to vehicle comparison (just like we use to do with filters).  (that’s my outer voice talking).

GM also needs to understand the Hispanic market.  Here in NY they all drive Honda.  Why not Chevy?

Enough….

Hope all is well with you.

Merry Christmas!

Tom

Hi Jack:

Good to hear from you and hope you and yours are in good health.  We're fine, thank you.

Wish Consumers Reports would read and take to heart Mr. Simmermaker's remarks.  Jim Guest recently commented in his monthly column that Toyotas are made in America while Suburbans are made in Mexico, implying that Toyotas are more domestic than Chevrolets are.  I do believe Consumers Report's intent is to drive domestic manufacturing (and not just automobiles either) down while praising anything imported.

Take care and keep up the good work,

Dave Casey

I'm glad the video finally worked - I got a good, if rueful, laugh out of it.  It brought back memories of our Zone group sitting in Regional meetings, listening to management try to explain how the inexplicable worked, while we sat and frowned at each other, wishing we were independently wealthy, invincible and thus able to point out the emperor's lack of attire.  Seriously.

I've always advocated, albeit sotto voce, that there should be a rule for upper management to take on disguises and do a two-month tour of duty in the ranks every year.  Just to get a good dose of reality, out where the sharks are, in the field.

Thanks for the laugh.  I sincerely hope they are doing positive things, like pounding on the government to reform health care, etc.

I hope you and yours are doing well.  We're just fine and dandy here in Saint Augustine.

Thanks for sending this reminder of the many men and women who make this country great.  If not for them, the soldiers, sailors, airmen and women, and our local firemen and police officers, who preserve and protect our way of life, it would all dissipate as did the dust from the World Trade Center.

During the Second World War a series of short movies were made called Why We Fight.  The presentation you sent could very well be used to the same purpose.  It's outstanding.

I was reluctant to do a monthly item as I don't have access to the disclaimers and liability limiters for my comments.  I will try to be more active in adding my comments to regular items where I have knowledge.  The one guest promoting Promark funds had some a good source reference.  They have done well the last 3 years but their life of fund data is average or less.  I am disappointed the Pathways magazine no longer includes detail performance data for all of the funds.  The numbers are readily available at netbenefits.com but so many don't really learn the internet paths.

TURNING GM AROUND

It can be done and should be done. The consequences will impact many working Americans not only now but in the future. Americans will be losing their production skills to the world and "MADE IN AMERICA" WILL BECOME HISTORY. If GM doesn't or isn't turned around, you will see Ford following GM "s path.

How can this be accomplished? First arouse all Americans to this serious plight get that old good American spirit going to save American jobs and the U.S. Auto Industry as a whole or pay the consequences of being under foreign auto industries, totally.

Yes, GM at one time built some poor quality jobs, they have learned their lesson, it was a wrong thing to do. I attribute it to the top management failure to correct these problems of poor quality and somewhat the Union for keeping silent as many of their hourly people were aware of the poor quality being produced. Let us forget the blame calling game and continue to turn GM around. Some further thoughts , how we can do it.

Rick Wagoner, CEO of GM cannot do it by himself, for he did not bring upon the current problem facing GM, himself, he inherited it from the top GM brass and top Union brass that preceded him as head of GM, case and point, the GM health insurance.

I am appealing to all hourly, salaried employees, the union top brass, GM top management, and yes, all retirees to support Rick Wagoner in his efforts to turn GM around and those of us ,who are GM stockholders....let us be watch dogs, help where we can.

I feel if GM does the below listed items, it will increase the sales and be helpful in turning GM around:

Improvement on........

1. Quality

2 .Styling

3. Fuel Economy

4. Car Warranty

5. Dealership relationship with customers

I understand the above is now being done by GM but poorly advertised to the general public.

Mr. Wagoner should realize if he left his door open to the retires, he would receive great support and some valuable info.

As a salaried retiree from GM Framingham Assembly Plant, who had spent nearly 37 years working for GM, I hope my article has given you new hope or raised your feelings to a positive feeling than one of a negative one., we must care or we will lose he middle class in our country.

MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA

"Big deal, you say? At least American companies still offer their workers pensions. According to a recent article in The Tennessean, Nissan North America new hires won't be able to count on a company pension when they retire. And if you work for Nissan and didn't happen to reach the age of 65 by the end of last year, you won't be participating in the company-sponsored medical plan either."

I believe that neither DCX, GM, nor Ford offer pensions for new hires as of January 2004.

I am still not able to post or edit previous posts.  You indicated that was a problem with AOL.  I have contacted them but still haven't resolved the issue.  I have also found certain undisclosed recipient mailings with Hyperlinks can't be sent and this was reported to AOL as well.  They told me it would be resolved within 24 hour a week ago but I still have the problem.

Any ideas?

Yes I concur to buy America.

But, America would out sell all others if  “BIG BUSINESS” stopped screwing Americans.

For example, my 1992 Buick Park Avenue gets 30 MPG on the road and 26-28 in town.  My 2003 Jeep Liberty gets 20 MPG on the road and 17 in town.  Why didn’t they use the Buick engine concept in the Jeep?  The Buick weights the same or more then the Jeep.

Now, since gas prices are raising and people are not buying large SUV’s Ford and GM are announcing automobiles  that average 30 MPG now.  WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN??????

I am a 79 year old retired member of the Detroit local of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I worked out of the local union hall for 42 years before retiring at age 62. During those years I would estimate that I spent 80% of that time working in Big Three auto plants in the greater Detroit area. (Wayne, Oakland, & Macomb counties. If it weren't for the Big Three and their local job shops I wouldn't be a well off financially today as I am. I will not consider owning, or driving a car that was not made by my chief benefactors and my neighbors!

Subject: Your recent public comments regarding American designed and manufactured vehicles

Mr. President George W. Bush

Sir: Your recent public comments implying that American vehicle designers and manufacturers are not producing motor vehicles which match or exceed those designed and produced by our foreign competitors were a real shock to me! My personal experiences tell me that is not an accurate statement!

I can see the Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Mercedes, Volkswagen, and all the rest of the foreign automotive manufacturers and their dealers advertising in the coming weeks ---"President Bush admits that GM, Ford, Chrysler vehicles are inferior to our superior products!!" Beware!! Do Not Buy American!!

JD Powers surveys of American and foreign vehicles prove that American designed and manufactured vehicles are superior or at least equal in category after category!

Rather than denigrating American designing and manufacturing, you should be encouraging the American car buying public to look at and compare the outstanding American product design, product quality, excellent 30+ MPG fuel economy, outstanding durability, and the excellent car dealers who have been serving American car buyers for the past 100 years.

Dear President Bush:

As a life long Republican I take offense with your comments That GM and Ford do not build relevant vehicles. Regarding GM vehicles which I am most familiar, I believe that they are more than relevant and are as good as or better than, on a dollar for dollar basis, any of the European and Japanese auto makers.
GM is the largest private provider of health care in the U.S., approximately 1.1 million people.
GM has a very large group of retirees, I am one, and these retirees have a very large impact on the economy.  Do you or your staff ever consider the following:
Nearly all of the transplant vehicle manufactures are give large tax breaks by the states in which they locate. When will you and the federal government assists the old line American companies to receive some type of tax breaks on older facilities?
G. M. and Ford pay better wages and definitely better benefits than the transplants.  Isn't this good for the economy and should not the federal government be encouraging the domestic companies?
The transplants have NOT created ONE new job in the U.S. They replace jobs lost at G. M. and Ford with less jobs at less money and benefits.
Will the transplants be in the U.S. 30 years from now when their tax benefits are expired and they have pension benefits to pay?

Regarding relevant vehicles, I will bet if I took the emblems off a G. M. or Ford product and did the same to the transplant products you or your staff could not identify which vehicle was which.  In addition, G. M. has many vehicles that are E 85 compatible, I own one, 2006 Chevrolet Impala.  One of the best vehicles on the road based on a dollar for dollar value.  Why have you and your administration not insisted that 85% ethanol fuel be available?
If you are really serious this action should be taken IMMEDIATELY since the vehicle is on the road but the fuel is not available for purchase.

Please ease up on G.M. and Ford and you and your administration give them some positive press rather than slamming them.  They are great companies who are struggling to keep people working with excellent wages and benefits and building great vehicles. We need to wake up the consumers in this country to the great products made by these companies and your and your administration negative comments do not help.

Dear Mr. President:

I was appalled at your comments not long ago that Detroit automakers
need to make more relevant products.  I could cite statistics and
reviews of our GM products to refute your implication, but I'll not
bother.  It might be lost on a President who prefers to visit Nissan
factories for photo ops.

Your callous actions and comments are deeply offensive to the
millions of Americans who make their livelihood by producing world-
class automotive products.  We simply do not understand why you
choose to ignore the plight of our industrial base, when it is within
your sphere of influence to pressure Japan and Korea to cease their
anti-competitive currency manipulation.

When you make such biased, and indeed anti-American statements such
as this, you further erode our ability to inform Americans that
Detroit products are not only competitive and relevant, but superior
in very many categories to the imports, be they quality, fuel-
efficiency or innovation.

Your comments actually harm our own economy.  What were you thinking?

George Bush, President of the United States - White House, Washington, DC

Dick Cheney, Vice-President of the United States

Mr President
Mr. Vice-President

Please take the time to read an excellent article that was printed in the Detroit News -- the article was written by  Mr. Daniel Howes and should be required reading by members of your administration, every member of the United States Congress and by active and retired, management and union represented, employees of the American Automobile Industry.

The auto industry doesn't want a bail out but deserves a level playing field, and when it comes to foreign competition -- it has been an uphill battle for far too long!  The same restrictions that the Japanese Government places on imports from the American Auto Industry should be the starting off point for Japanese product sold in the United States -- regardless of where that product is manufactured or assembled.

I live in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and frequently travel along US Interstate 81. I have noticed recently a disturbing number of foreign manufacturer's vehicles with US Government License Plates.  I think that foreign manufacturers should not be awarded any government contracts to supply vehicles for use by government employees if that foreign manufacturer is home based in a country that has restrictive trade policies.

The past week has been an exceptionally bad week for the Vice-President with  the accidental shooting in Texas.  I saw a pole this morning that indicated 52% of  Americans felt that the matter was handled extremely well based upon circumstances.  It should be comforting to know that a majority of Americans are compassionate and fair when someone is in a bad situation.

Thousands of Americans -- current employees and retired employees of Ford Motors and General Motors are in a bad situation. They need to know that their leaders can be compassionate and fair, have the ability to focus their attention on helping to resolve problems and offer the full resources of the people's government for aid and assistance.

Thanks for your interest in Test Drive and for your comments.

I try not to let popular “wisdom” or other prejudice influence me when I evaluate vehicles. Good ones should get good press; bad ones shouldn’t. But good and bad should be based on facts and educated opinion, not on assumptions.

Great article, Mr. Healey!  I read it on the GM retiree group web site, http://www.overthehillcarpeople.com/, and I was impressed, not just with the car, but, also, with your insight about an American made car.  Most reporters will not even give GM cars a second thought.  Thank you from an American who believes we all need to support our country by buying products made by American-owned businesses.

Keep up the good work!

Kathy

Great info you provide; it would be very helpful to report how many vehicles involved with foreign car recalls.

Thanks for your interest in Test Drive and for your link to the column. Your site must be popular. I’ve gotten quite a few e-mails that mention it.

To the extent it’s humanly possible, I ignore who makes a car or truck and try to focus on whether it’s a good, bad or mediocre vehicle. Bias based on what flag the automaker flies would be a disservice to my readers.

It’s my contention that, overall and over time, good vehicles get good reviews; bad vehicles don’t.

To help stay on track, I like to remind myself of something I read awhile ago: There is one principle guaranteed to keep mankind in everlasting ignorance. That principle is contempt prior to investigation.

Thanks again for your interest.

Hello Mr. Healey,

We at Overthehillcarpeople.com would like to thank you for writing this positive article about the Buick Lucerne and General Motors. It is not often you see positive news media about GM and its products. By featuring this American Made and American OWNED company car you have done something many in your field have feared to do for many years.

We appreciate your support of GM products and the American economy.

Regards,

Jack Dickinson

A fine article and a credit to the efforts of Buick and it's
new product and priced right I might add. The Over the Hill Car People will like this.
By the way, I have a 1980 Olds wagon and a 1996 Buick Park
Ave. and love them both. They each have 92,000 miles on them and I love them.

and old G.M. Retiree

Mr. Healey, thank you so much for publishing a positive article about US built cars.    I I live in Michigan and I read daily, how many jobs are being lost due to poor car sales.

Some of my friends who drive off-shore cars, keep saying American cars are not of high quality.    I disagree, but they say that I am biased because I worked for an American car company.     The truth is, our quality is great and equal if not better, than the off-shore models.

So, again, I thank you for being positive about American cars.

ps. I received a copy of your article from http://www.overthehillcarpeople.com/

I would ask that you encourage the membership on this site to write to Rick Wagoner regarding the recently announced GM salaried retiree health care cost caps.

I realize that some cuts may be needed, however in view of all the cuts we have taken over the last 35 years while the UAW has taken virtually none. I am deeply disappointed in Mr. Wagoner’s recent actions.  Why not hit the UAW harder for some give backs?

We do have a voice!!!!  If we flood Mr. Wagoner with an e-mail campaign maybe he may get the message.

His e-mail address should be rick.wagoner@gm.com

I sent my e-mail to him yesterday and did not get a rejection from the GM e-mail server so it must be accurate.

 Thanks     goodpair@earthlink.net

I AM ATTACHING A PICTURE OF MY HUSBAND CHUCK AND ME.  I HOPE THE TOASTING MATERIAL IS NOT INAPPROPRIATE.  WE WERE VISITING THE RIVERFRONT IN SAVANNAH, GEORGIA AND HAVING A GREAT TIME.

I KNOW I AM GOING TO ENJOY THIS WEBSITE.  MANY OF MY FRIENDS HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT IT AND GIVEN ME NEWS THEY SAW ON IT.  MANY OF THE NEW RETIREES I AM SEEING, I HELPED THROUGH THE RETIREMENT PROCESS AND I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE THEM ENJOYING RETIREMENT AND LIFE IN GENERAL.

IT IS TOO BAD THAT WE WORKED FOR A COMPANY THAT OFFERED SO MUCH AND TODAY THE RETIREES ARE HAVING TO WORRY ABOUT THE SECURITY OF THOSE BENEFITS.  I AM KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED THAT GM PULLS OUT OF THIS SLUMP AND THINGS GET BETTER.

I WILL STAY IN TOUCH WITH THE SITE AND PARTICIPATE IN ANY WAY THAT I CAN.

REGARDS, VI SPRINGER

I'm trying to get some of the old Chevrolet commercial music.  Can you suggest a website or source for "see the USA in your Chevrolet" and anything with "hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet"?

Thank you.

E-Mail:

Jack,  the other day I logged on to GM Family First and they had a new choice, at least to me, called Retiree Marketplace.  It contains several companies that offer discounts to GM Retirees.

An example is Sprint offers mobile phone customers an 18% discount off your base phone rate. Click on the Sprint logo for details and how to sign up.  Other companies offer various discounts.

Other members might be interested in checking out Retiree Marketplace.

Hello Jack,

I am currently visiting family in Shanghai, China- and as I told you when we spoke, my Son-in-law is here with the GM Asia Group.  GM has a very good image here, and I wish the rest of the world would give us some credit. I will be back end of January. Yes, I would do an interview- only checking email every few days from here- having too much fun. Saw and walked the Great Wall. Wow.

I am glad this Web site keeps some good news about GM going. I recently purchased more stock. I am not a slacker.

Best regards.

Hi Jack:

I hope you and Kathy had a Joyous Christmas and I wish you both a Happy New
Year!

Thanks for sending this article.  Good stuff!  Question:  Should I remove
the Over The Hill e-mail address before forwarding?  I'd like to send it to
a number of friends, but not before I make sure it's ok.

And thanks also for the birthday greetings.  I'm feeling wonderful and
"rearing to go" to conquer 2006.

Take special care,

Dave Casey
