Well, right or wrong, we have a problem.
GM sells approximately the same number of units as GM. GM has 8,500 dealerships, Toycarcompany has just over 2,000. Chevrolet has 80 dealerships in Chicago. Toycarcompany has 38.
What is the cost of administration of all these franchisees—and if reduced, how much will that cost. In the old days, every small town had a Chevy dealership and no one would drive 60 miles to buy a car. Today that is different.
Where does GM go??
Thought are welcome.

Jack,
This Detroit News video was excellent. Its too bad we are asleep at the
switch in this country. In my opinion the ship has sailed and we have
missed it. Every day we are seeing industry leaving our shores for
elsewhere.
I don't look for too much added investment by auto companies in the US,
especially with the downturn we are experiencing. This holds true for
other industries as well. I'm afraid we will continue to see our loss of
industry and subsequent loss of living standard for the foreseeable future.
You can't tell me that GM doesn't know what Ford is doing. Question is,
what is GM doing?
Thanks again the heads up on these matters.

Note in the video that the vendors to Ford are involved in the assembly of Ford's product.
Best to all!

You may recall that I am the president of the National Retiree Legislative Network (and a member of the Overthehillcarpeople. We are in the process of contesting the EEOC rule that places all retirees over age 65 who are eligible for Medicare, at risk. As you may know, companies may severely reduce or eliminate their healthcare plans leaving their retirees reliant on Medicare only. We expect companies to do begin taking the action starting with the announcement of their 2009 healthcare plan revisions.
Here is what is at risk:
All affected retirees who currently have the Catastrophic coverage (out-of-pocket maximum protection) will lose it. It is expensive to replace.
All affected retirees who currently have good prescription drug plan coverage will lose it. They will be n Medicare D and must pay It is expensive to replace.
Any retiree with plan coverage greater then 80% of benefits will lose up to 20% of their coverage unless they buy Medigap insurance at a cost of about $150 / month (varies by carrier and state). Some companies pay the 20% difference as a supplement.
The NRLN has developed list of 17 questions for all candidates for President, and the Senate and House that deals with this and other retiree benefits. Results by state, Congressional district, candidate and question will be posted for all to see. We will also indicate those who failed to respond. You can see the list of questions and the entire NRLN legislative agenda at http://www.nrln.org/.
I am requesting that you ask all other Overthehillcarpeople to read this material and join us in lobbying for the reversal of the EEOC rule and for all other retiree issues highlighted on our agenda. The NRLN is the only national organization that focuses 100% on lobbying for retirees only. There are 17 retiree associations that belong to the NRLN, including Ford, Chrysler and GM Detroit Diesel retirees and our membership includes people from management, technical / professional and production worker retiree universes. The count of retirees behind these organizations is well over 2,000,000 and more that 20,000 (growing daily) are on our grassroots site.
We are asking everyone with an email address to go to our website and sign on as a grassroots supporter. Those who do will get lobby request messages only. These will be requests to send prepared but editable messages to their Senators and Congressmen asking them to support retiree legislation. No solicitors, no outside access, system has never been penetrated and all we need is name, email address, zip code + 4 digits( Identifies Congressional District), and home company or NRLN association. We have a 13 member board, a national legislative committee and lobby and legal support in Washington that focuses on retiree issues only.
Please help us grow support through our grassroots network by asking all Overthehillcarpeople to checkout the website and sign up. If the have questions they can email me as indicated below our contact our VP communications, Ed Beltram edbeltram@msn.com
The next few years will be pivotal. National Health Care, Medicare and the Social Security system are all subject to change be members of Congress, some of whom who don’t always see the needs of retirees as important. We do.

This is the message I sent Rick Wagoner:
Mr. Wagoner, I am a salaried 8th level retiree who has recently seen my GM Health Care Insurance deductible increase from: $300 to $500 and now this year to $1,500 over what Medicare covers. The majority of your salaried organization worked hard, spent a lot of casual time devoted weekends when necessary with the assurance that General Motors appreciated us and would honor their retirement pledge to us. This has not happened on your watch. Please review these outrages increases and honor your commitment to the salary generation family that has given you their loyalty and support over the past decades.
I hope others have responded likewise.

I am just one month away from my first two-year lease of a great GM car, the Buick Lucerne. I have thoroughly enjoyed driving this car for two years; so much so that I have decided to purchase this car in lieu of returning the car to dealer. At time of lease, I paid a little over $1,000 to purchase additional miles and was told that it would be returned if I didn't go over the miles which covers me to 36,000 miles. I currently have 28,400 miles so I will be a long way from that that mileage. GMAC has informed me that they will not return that $1,000 to me even though I came nowhere close to using the miles. They informed me that if I returned the car, I would receive the $1,000 but if I purchase this vehicle, that money would not be returned. What would have happened if I gave them $5,000 extra at signing for additional mileage and never used them? The same thing.
I think this practice is most unfair and I want to tell all members to be aware of this procedure. Yes, I just donated a $1,000 gift to GM. Being a GM retiree after 41 years of dedicated GM service, I don't think this is a good practice and the way to treat a GM retiree or ANYONE for that matter.
I would appreciate suggestions from anyone that would like to respond.

For many years myself and other GM retirees have supported the NRLN (National Retiree Legislative Network) which can be viewed at http://www.nrln.org/ , because they are non-partisan and there legislative agenda is dedicated to protecting pension rights and other retirement benefits through the monitoring and enactment of federal legislation.
I suggest that this organization (NRLN) would desirable for those retirees who want to follow legislative activities and use the vary simple congressional contact system (Capwiz) which is available to them .
Can this information be made available on your home page so that when GM retirees go to http://www.overthehillcarpeople.com/ they could learn of the NRLN.

My name is
W.O. King, Jr. I am not a member but I found information about your site while "Googling."
I happened on a page that contains your retired/active members that included the
name of one of your members--Rick Ekey (Inland Fisher Guide).
I met Rick about 18 years ago and recently came across some information and his
business card that he sent to me in January 1991 following his trip on board the
USS Independence as part of a "Tiger Cruise" that occurs when a U.S. Navy ship
returns from extended overseas deployment.
At the time I was on active duty (Navy Captain (0-6)) and was the Assistant
Chief of Staff for Operations on Indy.
I am not requesting from you any personal info regarding him, i.e., address,
phone number, or e-mail, but would very much appreciate it if you could contact
him and provide him my e-mail address. He will likely recognize the above
information and, hopefully, contact me.
I have an 18 year old home address for him in Mt. Clemens, MI, but will hold off
sending anything to that address in hopes that I will hear back from you and/or
him.
Many thanks for your assistance. Other than helping host him on board Indy, our
common ground at the time was the fact that I am the original owner of a 1968
Pontiac GTO that was, at the time we met, in storage. After 18 years in storage
I still own it and it is now operable.
Kind regards,
wok

Hello,
We are Finnish relatives of Clark and Karen Smith, who as we understand are connected to Over The Hill Car People (with the help of Google, we found this: http://www.overthehillcarpeople.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=3823&sid=764d00e576e742d7254089f3f60afaec). We again received a Christmas greeting from them, so it occurred to us to ask if they have an email address, and if you could kindly help us to get it.
We know that Clark has been working at GM, so we probably have the right Clark Smith - we actually do have their mail address which is in Stow, MA. Please correct us if we are mistaken about the Smiths?
So if you happen to have their email address (if they have one, that is), it would be nice to get it. If you cannot help us with the issue, it's quite alright, we'll just mail them at their normal address. So no need to go through any trouble, this was actually just a wild goose chase... Thank you very much and have a nice spring!

Jack, appreciate the help and the incoming responses, I feel however I need to clarify and be more specific on the information I am trying to decode. I have the basic codes broken down; they are pretty much available on the web and in reference books. The ones that I need the help with may or may not be GM specific as they are on the body tag that Fisher used. The codes are usually on the lowest line of the body tag and each plant has it's own unique pattern. Below I will give brief descriptions of the information I am looking for by plant:
Atlanta (ATL) and Framington (FM): they do not appear to have any additional codes making them easy to decode with available references.
Freemont (BF) tag: has two six digit numbers at the bottom of their body tags and I feel this number is a series of codes for the body trim or options, i could be wrong.
Kansas City (Leeds) (KAN): the tag uses a 5 digit number followed by a single or double letter code, based on my research the number appears to have tow meanings, the last number fails to go above 6, all tags found to date, the first four numbers to me are the sequence of the body for a particular day with the last number indicating the day of the build week.
Baltimore (BAL): the tag uses a single to three letter code followed by a six digit number. The first letter B is found on all hardtop body tags and I believe it is related to trim or even the installation of the roof, the second letter F is only found on El camino and 300 deluxe tags and I feel may be related to trim also, the last letter is an L or M and is also related to the installation of trim or oprions.
Oshawa (OS) (Canada) applied RPO codes to their tag and GM of canada can provide
information making this tag the easiest to decode by far.
I'm pretty sure I need information that relates to Fisher codes as well as GMs
use of these letter/number codes and their meaning. I'm not sure anyone has
references to find their true meaning. I started my research because I have a
Baltimore
1969 chevelle which has an L on the trim tag. Many people in the chevelle hobby
have come to believe that the L code is related to the RPO Z25 option, whether
installation or deletion of standard Malibu trim on the final assembly line.
The exact process and management of the bodies from Fisher to the final assembly
line is not totally known for these plants, the Camaro Research Group (CRG),
has a good description but I am looking for additional information related to
the Chevelle assembly plants. I am really looking for proof of the meaning of
these codes, specifically documentation or references that define the codes and
their directed use. I understand that GM may have disclosure rules in place and
I do not want anyone to violate them, that being said if there is a way to
obtain permission to gain access to the required information please let me know
the process involved.
I am sending this as an update and ask that you please send it to your
contacts. I appreciate your help with this. Thank you very much, Andy

Sir, My name is Andy and I am a Team Chevelle member conducting some research
on 1969 Chevelle trim tags and the meaning of letter and number codes on them.
I am interested in knowing if you have any information available or any contacts
that I may be able to send questions to in order to attempt to determine the
meaning of a few of the codes used on body trim tags at each of the assembly
plants for Chevelles in 1969. If you know of anyone or a location where i can
research more info please let me know and/or pass my email address to them and
ask them if they can help. I am currently in Afghanistan on military duty but i
continue to conduct my research and need additional input to help out. Thanks
for your time and any help you may provide. Andy

Hello
I enjoy your site. My husband retired in 2006 with 30 years at Delphi in Lockport, NY and a buyout of $35,000, minus the tons of taxes, etc., they took out. There is a rumor around 'these parts' that the money had double the deductions for the FICA tax. One of the deductions was for about $2500 and the other was for about $600. Any news or information surrounding this? Word is, we are supposed to ask our tax people to check on it and we are supposed to get this whole amount back because it was a mistake.
Thank you
