Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder to Free Press: 'This is the opportunity to hit that reset button'

Ron Dzwonkowski: Fair might be fair -- but to whom?

Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican legislative leaders unveiled this afternoon a revised tax reform plan that scales back the governor’s proposed pension tax but retains his plan to scrap most of the state’s business tax.

Under the revised proposal, pension income would not be subject to taxation for those 67 and over. For those 60 to 66, $20,000 of pension income would be exempt ($40,000 for a couple).

The changes would substantially reduce the size of the proposed pension tax from about $900 million a year to $300 million. But it is still likely to face harsh criticism.

Snyder, House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, and Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, announced the agreement at a news conference at the Capitol. But neither Bolger nor Richardville could guarantee they would have the votes to approve it.

“We’re pretty close to full agreement,” Richardville said.

All three said their primary focus was enacting tax changes that would make Michigan more economically competitive and create jobs.

Republican lawmakers had been bucking the pension tax plan, with some suggesting they wouldn’t vote for it in any form.

Michigan GM Retirees

As you know by now, Governor Snyder has proposed a tax increase on pensions. The GMNRA/Over The Hill Car People is
very concerned over this proposal and has expressed our concerns that this proposal places an unfair burden to balance
Michigan’s budget on a specific group of retired seniors. You can find additional information at this link: http://forums.overthehillcarpeople.com/viewtopic.php?t=6585

We urge you to contact the Governor’s office and your local State representative and express your concern and disagreement
with this proposal. It is vitally important that we make our concerns known to those who are responsible for making sure this
proposal does not become law.

We’ve included a template communication for your use. Please customize this template to make it more personal and then copy
and paste in your letter/E-mail. To assist you in finding your State Senator and Representative, we have provided steps to follow

Template Letter/E-mail:

Dear __________:

I am a retiree from General Motors and a member of the GM National Retiree Association/Over The Hill Car People. I
want to express my concern and disappointment in the proposal by Governor Snyder to raise the tax on
retiree pensions. Many states such as Alabama, Tennessee and Florida do not tax their retirees pensions and we feel
Michigan should show the same respect and concern for their retirees.

Salaried retirees have already seen their pensions and benefits reduced and this proposal would place an unfair burden
on these seniors who are on fixed incomes and who will also be affected by the other proposed cuts. Governor Snyder’s
proposal if passed into law will negatively affect the retirement security of Michigan retirees and may send many to reside
in other more tax friendly states.

I am asking that you do everything you can to make sure this proposal does not become law.

Sincerely,
